Hydrating overnight masks have become increasingly popular in the skincare industry as of late. Many popular brands are launching overnight skincare products and promising hydrated skin by the morning. And while it sounds great in theory, we’re curious about whether an overnight face mask is necessary for your routine, especially if you’re already using a nighttime moisturizer. What’s the difference between an overnight mask and moisturizer?

“An overnight sleep mask and moisturizer can have similar ingredients and benefits, however, a mask will typically have higher concentrations of active ingredients for a boost of moisture, while a moisturizer is formulated for daily use as more of a maintenance plan,” says Deanne Mraz Robinson, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist. “Sleep masks also work with our skin during its natural reparative process during our sleep cycle.” Hydrating overnight masks are typically packed with humectant and emollient properties that work to deeply penetrate the skin at night while also supporting the health of the skin’s outermost layer, she explains. Ultimately, the differences between an overnight mask and moisturizers aren’t that distinct. Like any other skincare product, overnight masks can be formulated to target different skin concerns depending on the ingredients used, says Robert Finney, M.D., a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at Entière Dermatology. However, despite the lack of differences, that doesn’t make them any less effective, which brings us to our next question.

Do you need an overnight mask?

“It is a bit of a marketing tool since masks are so hot right now,” says Dr. Finney. “But, they can be helpful, especially if you have sensitive skin.” Dr. Robinson agrees and says, “If your skin is dry and dull, it may benefit from a hydrating sleep mask one to three times a week.” If you’re someone who’s looking for an extra boost of hydration or simply likes the feel of a soothing overnight hydrating mask, then you may enjoy adding one into your nighttime routine.
